Revna's Epic Poem

Canto I: Silent Birth

  1. As the Storm raged and the gods drank above

  2. The waves crashed, and clawed, and climbed up the shores

  3. the wooden ships creaked, and the rolled sails flapped

  4. The villagers were huddled in their huts,

  5. enjoying the warm embrace of the fire

  6. as the fathers told stories to their kin.

  7. But in one it was quiet, deathly so

  8. Clan Ulfhild should have been celebrating

  9. The first kin, silent, small and fragile

  10. The newborn mother cried in grief and pain

  11. The father shouted in anger and rage

  12. the nursemaid, offered sincerities

  13. But one voice stood out, but was not the three

  14. “head out and pray, the Gods may yet help you!”

  15. the loud voice called over the storm outside

  16.

  17. The husband reached to take the brown-haired boy

  18. And the mother, still sore, gave him away,

  19. the father left the safety of the hut,

  20. traveling to the shrine of the Storm Gods

  21. Keeping wet and cold away from his son

  22. wrapped in fur, silent like: eye of the storm

  23. reaching the destination, what path would

  24.  the gods choose? would it be life or be death.

  25. “Mighty God of thunder, I plead to you!”

  26.

  27. The storm raged and wind blasted his hood off

  28. As thunder crackled and swirled under the clouds

  29. Two heads emerged and floated to the ground

  30. pulling lightning behind them only when

  31.  they were close did Botulf notice the clouds

  32.  take the forms of Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, and

  33. the lightning a chariot that carried

  34. Thor. “You summon me Clansman, to what end?”

  35. Thor questioned, his mighty voice challenging

  36. thunder and lightning for supremacy

  37. “Please strengthen my first-born heir, let him live!”

  38. Botulf pleaded as he looked to the god,

  39. before suddenly finding himself back

  40. stepping as the God attempted to rip

  41. the child from his arms. “you brave this storm, and"

  42. "me perhaps you are foolish?” Thor stated

  43.  is voice booming as if it was thunder

  44. itself. Botulf kept quiet pulling the

  45.  loose furs tight. “I do not wish to challenge

  46.  you mighty god, but I ask you promise

  47. my child strength to live, before I give him.”

  48.

  49. “You have my word Botulf, of clan Ulfhild,

  50.  Your child will have the strength of one of my

  51. steeds, but you must choose which one i will bleed?”

  52.

  53. “Clan Ulfhild is not afraid to bear teeth.”

  54. Botulf proclaimed, making Thor smile as he

  55. took knife from his belt and slit Tanngrisnir’s

  56. throat, causing a sea of red to flood a

  57. goblet that appeared suddenly in thor's

  58. hand. Thor raised his hammer, and healed his goat

  59. before returning to Botulf and poured

  60. little by little into the child’s mouth,

  61. until at last the baby boy cried, his

  62. voice echoing in the rain, like the waves that

  63.  splashed on the rocks below. “You will name him

  64.  Revnar, after my father.” Thor proclaimed,

  65. as he mounted this chariot, and was

  66. carried by lightning to the clouds once more.

  67.

  68. Botulf agreed with silence, and began

  69. to trudge through the rain, as his own furs drank

  70. in the droplets of water, that pelted

  71. him as he marched returned to the village.

  72. Revnar’s cries were louder than barraging

  73. thunder, causing faces to peak out to

  74. spot the new father and child as they returned

  75. home entering the wooden hut, Botulf

  76. surrendered Revnar to the nursemaid

  77. and removed his furs before returning

  78.  to his child and wife, to find that his sons

  79.  hair was now white as ash and soft as fleece.
